ALL INDIA MUSLIM MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT

Mushawarat Opposes Government Proposal on Dhar Masjid; Proposal Amounts to Conversion of Masjid into a De-facto Mandir; Shahabuddin's Letter to Union Minister of Culture & Chief Minister of MP

New Delhi, 4 March, 2003:
Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has addressed the following letter to Shri Jagmohan, Union Minister of Culture and Shri Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh on the proposal to open the 'Bhojshala' Masjid in Dhar to the Hindus every Tuesday:

As the President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, I must convey to you that the Muslim community all over the country is deeply distressed by your proposal on Dhar Masjid and sees it as yet another example of the executive's surrender to majoritarian pressure to enable the majority community to occupy a Masjid and then to convert it into a Mandir by stages.

By permitting the Hindus to take rice and flowers with them, though there is no temple and no idol inside, the Masjid will be converted into a de-facto Mandir. Moreover, the visitors may include mischievous elements who would not show due respect to a Masjid and commit acts which would amount to desecration. This would create a continuous source of friction between the two communities.

The Mushawarat would like to point out that the proposal violates both the law governing protected monuments as well as the 1991 law relating to religious places.

The Mushawarat suggests that the Central and State Governments should not take an adhoc decision but decide this issue in accordance with the law of the land and as a first step appoint a Commission of Inquiry to establish the factual situation, obtaining on 15 August, 1947 and in 1952 when the monument was taken under protection.
