Mushawarat Condemns US Occupation of Iraq
Calls Upon UN to Play Central Role in Reconstruction
New Delhi, 1 May, 2003: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has taken note of the fact that though the Iraq War came to an end with the entry of the US forces in Baghdad, Iraq continues to remain under military occupation, with no end in sight and demands the immediate withdrawal of all occupation forces and their replacement by a multinational force under the UN flag.
The AIMMM appreciates the heroism of the Iraqi people who have stood up against the occupation regime and strongly condemns the repeated use of force against peaceful demonstrators.
The AIMMM also demands that the UNO should play the central role in the rehabilitation of Iraq and the UN S.G. should appoint a Special Representative with the mandate to restore the civil administration, to arrange consultations among the representatives of all sections of the people for the formation of an interim Government, which should convene a Constituent Assembly for drafting a new Constitution for Iraq.
The AIMMM feels deeply anguished that the occupation forces, far from controlling lawlessness, have encouraged, supervised and even participated in the pillage of the historic and cultural heritage of Iraq and of Islam and appeals to the UNESCO to launch an international campaign for the restoration of the invaluable antiques.
The AIMMM is of the considered view that the USA and the UK should between them foot the bill for the reconstruction of the economic and physical infrastructure destroyed by the invading forces and for the rehabilitation and humanitarian relief of the people.
The AIMMM also demands that till the formation of an interim national Government there should be a total ban the allocation of oilfields to foreign oil companies or award of reconstruction contracts to foreign companies.
The AIMMM reiterates its view that the UN Weapons Inspectors should be given an opportunity to complete their inspection so that the economic sanctions against Iraq may be lifted.
The AIMMM calls on the State-Members of the Non-aligned Movement that in cooperation with the Arab League and the OIC, to mount a political offensive, in the UN and outside, to liberate Iraq from foreign occupation, to restore its sovereignty and independence, to safeguard its territorial integrity and to protect its economic resources from imperialist and neo-colonialist plunder."
