Fall of Mayawati Govt. in UP Today
Will Decide Future of India Tomorrow
AIMMM Appeals to BSP MLAs, whom it had Endorsed in Election, to break away from Mayawati
New Delhi, 2 June, 2003: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The major Opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh Assembly have requested the Governor to dismiss the Mayawati Government or advise it to submit to a majority test on the floor of the Assembly.
It is no secret that the Mayawati contingent includes several MLA’s, many of them Muslims, who had been endorsed by the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) as well as by the A.I. Milli Council as the strongest secular candidate in their constituencies and who had pledged not to support the BJP under any circumstances and had gone on to defeat the BJP.
Unfortunately they fell in line when the BSP decided to form a coalition Government with the BJP. This was nothing short of an act of political opportunism and ideological corruption.
Time has come for these MLA’s to redeem themselves, proclaim their faith in secularism and break away from the apron strings of Mayawati. The fall of Mayawati Government today may indeed decide the future of the country tomorrow.
At this historic moment the AIMMM appeals to all secular MLA’s to stand up and be counted."
