MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
Full Support to AIMPLB’s Decision on Shankaracharya’s Formula
And Its Appeal to Secular-minded and Peace-loving People to
Defend Constitution and Rule of Law
Advises AIMPLB Not to Abandon Quest of Honourable Settlement
But Negotiate Only with Union Government, Not Private Individuals
New Delhi, 10 July, 2003: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) fully endorses and unreservedly supports the decision of the Executive Committee of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board on 6 July, 2003 to rule out any discussions with the H.H. the Kanchi Shankaracharya on his proposal that the Muslim community donate the Babari Masjid site for the construction of the proposed Ram Mandir and to reiterate the Shariat’s mandate that the site of a Masjid is not negotiable.
The AIMMM advises the AIMPLB that while keeping to its commitment to accept the final judicial verdict on the title to the Babari Masjid site, the AIMPLB should not abandon the quest of an honourable and reasonable out-of-court settlement which restores the Babari Masjid site to the Muslim community, free of all encumbrances. But it should hold formal negotiations only with the Union Government and not with private individuals, howsoever eminent.
The AIMMM has always looked at the Babari Masjid Question, not just as a conflict of interest between the two communities but as a Question of Equality and Justice, of Fundamental and Human Rights, of the Constitution and the Rule of Law. In this context, the AIMMM endorses the appeal by the AIMPLB to the secular-minded and peace-loving people of India to reject the ideology of hatred, exclusivism, divisiveness and violence propagated by the VHP and unitedly to defend the cause of Constitutionalism, whose essence is the Rule of Law."
