Supreme Court’s Unprecedented Strictures against Gujarat Government and its Irresponsible Record in Investigation and Prosecution of Riot Cases
Mushawarat Appeals to Democratic and Secular Forces to Press the Demand for Dismissal of State Government and Imposition of President’s Rule
New Delhi, 13 September, 2003: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) demands that the Union Government should take due note of the unprecedented strictures by the Supreme Court against the Gujarat Government on its acts of omission and commission in the Best Bakery Case.
Considered in their totality, the inability or unwillingness of the State Government to contain or control the genocidal carnage, its questionable record in registering the FIR’s, its half-hearted investigation and prosecution of the cases, its obvious game to shield the culprits, its failure to rehabilitate the displaced in security and dignity, to restore the confidence of the beleaguered community and to protect their Human Rights can lead to only one conclusion that the State Government is unable to fulfill its basic duties and that the Constitutional machinery has failed in the State.
In the circumstances, the AIMMM appeals to all secular and democratic forces to press for the immediate dismissal of the State Government and the imposition of the President’s Rule."
