UP C.M. and Administration Felicitated for Dealing Effectively with VHP’s Threat to Peace
VHP Campaign Meant to Incite Hindus,
Garner Votes for BJP and Terrorize Muslims
AIMMM Demands Ban on VHP & Prosecution of Togadia and Others
New Delhi, 18 October, 2003: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) felicitates the people of Ayodhya and the Government of Uttar Pradesh for dealing effectively with the invasion of Ayodhya by the so-called Ram Bhaktas in a peaceful and decisive manner.
The developments during 15-17 October, 2003 have clearly proved that the VHP does not command much influence in the heartland or even in the peripheral regions of the country. Indeed, the VHP stands disowned by the Sants and Mahants as well as the common people of Ayodhya.
The AIMMM deems its duty to place on record its deep appreciation for the resolute and uncompromising stand taken by the UP Chief Minister Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav and by the State and district administration in blocking the build-up by VHP in Ayodhya, banning the proposed Sammelans and controlling the situation with the least use of force and in particular, for making credible arrangements for the security of the small Muslim community in Ayodhya which could be the likely target of the VHP’s hordes, out of frustration and mischief.
The AIMMM fails to understand the logic of the VHP’s choice of Ayodhya for its agitation on its demand for legislation for the transfer of the acquired land for the construction of the proposed Ram Mandir. The acquired land is in the custody of the Union Government and the legislation is the prerogative of the Parliament. The State Government has nothing to do with the fulfillment of these demands. The VHP should have organized its agitation in Delhi without disturbing the peaceful environment of
Ayodhya.
The AIMMM considers that notwithstanding the war of words, the real objective of the VHP was basically political, to provoke violence in Ayodhya and thus to raise ‘Hindu’ sentiments and garner ‘Hindu’ votes in the coming Assembly elections for BJP, the political front of the RSS.
The AIMMM demands that the Union and all State Governments concerned take due and immediate note of the provocative and incendiary statements by the VHP leaders, particularly by Togadia, whose purpose is to terrorize the Muslims of the country, and to ban and prosecute its leaders under POTA."
