MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
AIMMM's letter to Ambassador of Thailand in India on
murder of 88 Muslim youth in Narathiwat province in Pattani region of Thailand
28 October, 2004
H.E. Mr. Chirasak
Thanesnant,
Ambassador of Thailand in India,
56-N, Nyaya Marg,
Chanakyapuri,
New Delhi – 110021
Excellency,
The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), New Delhi which is the apex forum of Muslim organizations and personalities of national eminence, is shocked to learn that following a police firing which took 8 lives, more than 80 Muslim youth lost their lives through suffocation while being transported in police vehicles in Narathiwat province in Pattani region of Thailand, on 26 October, 2004.
Apparently more than 1,000 youth who were arrested after the firing had their hands tied and than placed on top of each other, in just 6 trucks.
Your Excellency may recall that this is the second instance of inhuman and excessive use of force against the Muslims of Pattani, amounting to state terrorism, within one year.
The AIMMM strongly protests against repression and treatment of human beings which violate all canons of international law and morality and constitute a slur on the good name and the cultural heritage of the Thai people.
The AIMMM is of the considered view that violence cannot solve a political problem which must be tackled through negotiations.
The AIMMM requests Your Excellency to convey our request that the Government of Thailand establish a Commission of Inquiry headed by a Judge of the Supreme Court of Thailand to inquire into the tragic occurrence and fix the responsibility and punish those found responsible for this atrocity, as well as immediately to grant adequate compensation to the next-of-kin of those killed.
Accept, Excellency, the assurances of our highest consideration,
Sincerely,
Sd/- Syed Shahabuddin
