London, 4 September, 2004:
Council of Indian Muslims - UK (CIM) has welcomed the decision by a Federal Cabinet to probe the causes of the burning of Sabarmati Express in February 2002 in which 58 passengers were killed in the Western Indian state of Gujarat.
Despite the fact that several agencies, including Forensic Department of India, had rejected the possibility that the train was burnt from outside, the BJP led government of Gujarat led by Chief Minister Mr Narandra Modi used the incident as an excuse to inflame communal passions in the state. After which savage anti-Muslim riots engulfed the province. More than 2000 people, mostly Muslims, were killed and properties worth of millions of rupees was destroyed.
"This is a welcome move. Such an impartial inquiry would settle once for all the controversies created by the Sangh parivar and put an end to the ongoing victimisation of Muslims by the fascist government of Gujarat.". CIM’s chairman Mr Munaf Zeena said in a statement today.
"We congratulate the Indian Government, specially the Railway Minister Mr Lalu Parsad Yadav for his historic and brave move. We believe that such a bold and principled step will be a great lesson for all of those politicians who use tragedies to serve their political purpose." Mr Zeena said.
Zeena also said that t"The announcement will restore the confidence in Government and administration not only of Muslims but other minority communities and weaker sections of the society as well."
