AIMMM Condemns the Siege of Najaf by Occupation Forces
Apprehension of Damage to Holy Shrines Causes
Deep Concern and Distress in the Muslim World
AIMMM Calls for Creation of No-War Zones in Najaf and Karbala
Requests Govt. of India to Use its Good Offices to Save the Shrines
New Delhi, 16 August, 2004: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis- e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement :
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) condemns the continuing siege of Najaf by the occupation forces and the forces of the interim government of Iraq.
The AIMMM shares the deep apprehension of the Muslim World about any damage to the Mausoleum of Hazrat Ali bin Abi Talib, who is revered by all Muslims, Sunnis and Shias alike. It is convinced that any such damage or desecration of the holy shrines in Najaf or in Karbala would be an irreversible tragedy and cause immense distress, outcry and revulsion in the whole Muslim world.
The AIMMM sees the siege as a continuation of the US invasion of Iraq and notes that the Sunnis and Shias of Iraq have already joined hands in resisting the US occupation. It is convinced that only the withdrawal of all foreign troops from the Iraqi soil can lead to meaningful political negotiations among the various religious communities and political groups in Iraq for securing peace, stability and constitutional progress.
The AIMMM appeals to the Government of the USA to lift the siege and treat Karbala and Najaf as No-War Zones.
The AIMMM also appeals to the Government of India to exert its good offices to prevent any damage to or desecration of the Mausoleum of Hazrat Ali."
