THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF MUSLIMS OF INDIAN ORIGIN

AFMI welcomes AP government’s Muslim reservation move

Michigan (USA), 14 July, 2004
: The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) has welcomed the move by the Andhra Pradesh government to give 5 per cent reservations to the state’s Muslims in the governmental and educational sectors. The governmental order when implemented will help the state’s Muslims in improving their economic and educational conditional.

According to a study by the Minorities’ Welfare Commissioner, 65 percent of Andhra Pradesh’s Muslims are living below the poverty line with annual incomes of Rs. 11,000 or below. Their literacy rate is 18 per cent as compared to 44 per cent in other communities.

The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) congratulates Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for taking the first step in fulfilling his electoral promise and hopes that the governmental order will be executed soon.

AFMI also asks the Andhra Pradesh government to not to give in to the immense amount of pressure being applied by the communalist and anti-secular forces to withdraw the order.

"AFMI urges the Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to initiate the necessary steps in formulating this reservation plan into a formal legislation , which would provide lasting benefits to a disadvantaged minority population and will be long remembered as a legacy of the Congress administration ," said Dr. Syed Samee, President of AFMI.

The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) is a North American based grassroots organization dedicated to the socio-economic and educational development of Muslims and other underprivileged masses of India. .
