Poor Turn-out in Lucknow and Gandhinagar Shows Voter’s Lack of Confidence in Vajpayee and Advani
Political Honour Demands they Step Down from Leadership of NDA
New Delhi, 12 May, 2004: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has taken due note of the fact that both Lucknow and Gandhinagar, the widely separated constituencies of Prime Minister Vajpayee and Deputy PM Advani, had a poor voter turn-out of about 35%, lower than that in the States, as a whole, and of the country despite their emphatic and repeated calls to the electorate to vote massively. Assuming that they secured 50% of the votes polled (which may in fact be lower), they would thus represent only about 17% of their electorates! Also not all sections of the people voted for them.
The AIMMM considers that the poor response of the voters shows their lack of confidence in the two leaders of the ruling coalition, as normally the turn-out is higher than average when the present and potential PM’s and Dy. PM’s are in the field. The question arises that if they do not command the confidence of their constituents, how can they presume to command the confidence of the people of the country?
The AIMMM suggests that if political honour has any meaning, the two leaders should both step down and withdraw from the leadership of the NDA."
