Mulayam Singh Has the Right to Criticize My Joining Congress
But His Equation of Ahmad Bukhari and Myself
Shows Lack of Political Discrimination
Does Refusal of Seat Adjustment with INC
Mean a Desire to Divide UP with BJP?
New Delhi, 7 April, 2004: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, Ex-MP, has issued the following Statement
:
"I have taken note of the Samajwadi Party President Shri Mulayam Singh Yadav’s criticism of my joining the Congress. I concede his right to do so.
But what has pained me is his equating me with Shri Ahmad Bukhari who has publicly extended support to the BJP and had earlier called upon the Muslims to boycott all secular parties and even the election itself, which would have obviously benefited the BJP. My record speaks for itself. I am, therefore, surprised by Shri Yadav’s lack of political discrimination.
Also Shri Yadav has claimed that his party alone is in the field to defeat the BJP and save the secular order. That is a vainglorious remark by the leader of a Party which, may secure, at best, 40 seats from UP in the house of 543.
Only understanding among all the secular parties can stop the Hindutva Rath. Alongwith other colleagues we have tried our best to persuade SP to make electoral adjustment with INC in UP, so that the secular vote is not divided and thus reduce BJP’s yield from UP to the order of 10 only.
The secular forces are all baffled by his persistently negative approach. Without imputing any motives to him I must ask Shri Yadav: Does he wish to divide UP between his party and the
BJP?"
