AIMMM Makes Last Minute Appeal to SP and INC To Reach Understanding in UP
Such Electoral Adjustment shall Ensure Secular Victory All Secular Forces in the Country shall Welcome it
New Delhi, 6 April, 2004: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"On the eve of the beginning of the first phase of General Election 2004 in Uttar Pradesh, the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), on behalf of all its Members, respectfully reiterates its appeal to the national leadership of the SP and the INC to reach an understanding on the division of the seats in the larger interest of the victory of the secular forces.
The AIMMM proposes that all 80 seats can reasonably be divided between SP and INC in the ratio of 2:1 on the basis of first and second position in 1999 and some mutual adjustment.
The schedule in UP is as follows:

Last Date of
| Last Date of
The AIMMM feels that if there is political will the nominations filed can be formally withdrawn and even those formally in the contest can publicly retire in favour of another. Therefore, the AIMMM is convinced that it is not yet late for reaching an understanding.
In making this last minute appeal to the SP and the INC not to stand on prestige or play the blame game but rise to the historic occasion, the AIMMM is convinced that all secular forces in the country and, in particular, the Secular voters in UP shall welcome and applaud such understanding and adjustment."
