MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
Najma Heptullah Should Join BJP and Contest
Lok Sabha Election from a Muslim Majority Constituency
New Delhi, 11 March, 2004: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"Since Dr. Najma Heptullah is unhappy with the Congress and, therefore, critical of the party which nurtured her from a non-entity to the Deputy Chairpersonship of the Rajya Sabha, honour demands that she resigns forthwith from the party and consequently from the Deputy
Chairpersonship.
Since, in her long career of 24 years, she has never contested a Lok Sabha election, she should place her record of service to the country and the community before the people and contest a Lok Sabha seat from her home state Maharashtra or elsewhere, on the BJP ticket whose leader Atal Behari Vajpayee is her current hero.
Since in the BJP’s eyes, as the self-proclaimed ‘grand daughter’ of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad and for her services to the country, she commands the support of the Muslim community, the BJP should give her the Lok Sabha ticket from one of the 10 odd Muslim majority seats in the country. That should assure her a place in the next Vajpayee cabinet, if the BJP/NDA returns to power. Otherwise, she can opt for yet another term as Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha and wait for the next vacancy in the Vice-Presidency or even the Presidency of the Republic."
