Fourth Shah Waliullah Award for the year 2002 on ‘Qur’anic Disciplines and the Contemporary Context’
New Delhi, 25 February, 2004: The fourth Shah Waliullah Award for the year 2002 on ‘Qur’anic Disciplines and the Contemporary Context’ instituted by the Institute of Objective Studies, New Delhi in memory of Hazrat Shah Waliullah of Delhi will be conferred posthumously on Hazrat Maulana Shahabuddin Nadvi, the renowned scholar for his outstanding contribution to Islamic learning and to understand the modern time with all its complexities from a truly Qur’anic perspective.
To commemorate the outstanding services of Hazrat Shah Waliullah Dehlvi to promote the Islamic values, the Institute of Objective Studies instituted an Award known as "Shah Waliullah Award’ in 1999 to honour eminent scholars who have done outstanding work in Social Sciences, Humanities, Law and Islamics. The award is in the form of a cash of one lakh rupees and a scroll of honour containing citation which is given annually to the best scholar of the year.
The first award for the year 1999 was conferred posthumously on Maulana Syed Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadvi, popularly known as Maulana Ali Mian for his outstanding contribution to ‘Islamic Disciplines (Uloom-e-Islami). The second award for the year 2000 was conferred on Late Qazi Mujahidul Islam Qasmi Saheb for the valuable contribution made by him to ‘Islamic Fiqh’. The third award for the year 2001 was conferred on Prof. M. Nejatullah Siddiqui, an authority in the area of Islamic Economics and Islamic or interest-free banking.
Further, under essay writing competition (junior category) on ‘Shah Waliullah Approach to the Qur’an’ Janab Mahboob Farogh Ahmad Qasmi, teaching Hadith at Darul Uloom, Sabilus Salam, Salalah, Barkas, Hyderabad (A.P.) will be given a cash prize of Rs. 25,000/- on his essay as considered to be the best essay.
Both the decisions: (i) the Award to Hazrat Maulana Shahabuddin Nadvi (R.A), and (ii) the cash prize to Janab Mahboob Farogh Ahmad Qasmi, were taken unanimously by the Board administering the Shah Waliullah Award, in its meeting held at New Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr. M. Manzoor Alam (Chairman, IOS). The other members of the Board and special invitees thereto, who attended the meeting are Maulana Syed Rabey Al-Hasani Nadvi (President, All India Muslim Personal Law Board), Hon’ble Mr. Justice A.M. Ahmadi (Chancellor, A.M.U., Aligarh), Prof. A.R. Momin (Deptt. of Sociology, University of Mumbai), Dr. Abdul Hasib (Former Executive Director, Reserve Bank of India), Prof. Z.M. Khan (Deptt. of Political Science, Jamia Millia Islamia), Prof. Z.A. Nizami (Director-Academics, IOS) and Mr. Mahmood Ali (Ex-Joint Secretary to the Govt. of India).
The award conferring function is scheduled to be organised at New Delhi on March 27, 2004 (Saturday) at 3.30 p.m. The cash prize (under junior category) on the best essay will also be given in the same function.
It was also decided in the meeting that the topic for the 5th Shah Waliullah Award for the year 2003 will be ‘Historiography in Islamic Perspective’ and the topic for the next Essay Competition will be ‘Human Rights in Islamic Perspective’.
