MAJLIS-e-MUSHAWARAT
Advani’s Statements Support VHP and Make State Party to Dispute
Behind-the-Scene Conspiracies and Managed Negotiations No Answer
Casting Doubts on Finality of Judicial Process is Contempt of Judiciary
Government Should Execute 1994 Supreme Court Judgement
New Delhi, 14 January, 2004: Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
"Following the expression of concern by H.H. the Dalai Lama on 9 January, 2004 Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Shri L.K. Advani has thrice spoken, in quick succession, to advise the Muslim community to give up its claim on the Babari Masjid site and allow the construction of the proposed Ram Janambhoomi Mandir in accordance with the VHP’s standing site plan. His statements have served to restore the Ayodhya Question on the national agenda, obviously for electoral gain. They have also served to unmask the real face of the Government. Today it is openly supporting the VHP Plan and advancing its immediate priority to obtain possession of Babari Masjid site, one way or the other. The Union Government has become a party to the dispute.
Shri Advani’s stand shows scant respect to H.H. the Dalai Lama as his proposal neither follows the Middle Path, nor it is balanced, reasonable, or symmetrical between the two sides.
It is an open secret that the Government has been feverishly engaged in behind-the-scene machinations for the last 4 years to divide and confuse the Muslim community through known and unknown pawns using all possible inducement and also working at various levels to line up some relatively known though unrepresentative Muslims to sign a document of surrender on the dotted line. The AIMMM reiterates its considered view that a conspiratorial approach will never resolve the dispute and negotiations arranged with fanfare by a lame-duck Government will lead nowhere.
The AIMMM reiterates its faith in the Judiciary and deplores the manner in which the Government, the BJP and the VHP are applying indirect pressure on the Special Bench of the Allahabad High Court and the Supreme Court by repeating the worn-out argument that the judicial verdict cannot resolve the problem in the face of VHP’s resistance and that the government may find it impossible to execute the verdict. They are thus hinting that, to be implementable, their verdict should be acceptable to the VHP. Such lack of self-confidence and faith in the judicial process amount to violation of the oath of office and contempt of the Judiciary.
The AIMMM demands that the Union Government should commit itself to abide by the Supreme Court Judgement of 19 October, 1994, to maintain the status quo and wait for the final judicial verdict on title to the Babari Masjid site and then to implement the road map elaborated by the Supreme Court for a final settlement.
