Jamiat-Ulama-e-Hind
IMDT Act: Safeguarding citizenship rights essential
New Delhi, 13 July, 2005: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has expressed concern over that the annulment of IMDT Act may provide the opportunity to communal elements for vitiating climate of the country on the pretest of checking infiltration. The campaign of suspecting citizenship of Indians shall receive a new impetus. The situation may aggravate in states like Assam. Indian citizens have been targeted after independence in the name of ‘infiltration’. Maulana Mahmood Madani, General Secretary, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind expressed the view that he has no sympathy with illegal immigrants. However, he is against harassing Indian citizens, as “immigrants”. There have been such incidents in the past. The Foreigners’ Act has been a total failure for protection of the rights of Indian citizens. He has appealed to secular parties for passing a comprehensive law that is effective for protection of citizenship rights of bona fide citizens but also provides for punishment to those who make false obligations.
Maulana Madani refused to comment of the judgment of the Supreme Court. He said that a team of lawyers is taking stock of the situation; He reiterated the firm determination of his organization for safeguarding the citizenship rights as in the past.
