Statement on the terrorist attack on the Babri premises

New Delhi, 5 July, 2005: "The ugly efforts of the terrorists to smash into the protected Babri Masjid premises with the probable intention to harm the symbolic Ram Temple located therein was a heinous crime that deserves strongest condemnation. The incident also merits intensive and impartial investigation as it has hurt equally the sentiments of both Muslims and Hindus, among others. Normally, such destructive plans are masterminded by those fascist and divisive forces which aim at capitalizing upon these shocking and mind-boggling events. These evil forces need to be exposed so that the nation remains vigilant against their deadly designs. The unholy efforts of some opportunist political groups to fan hatred and violence must be taken as an anti-national activity and curbed with heavy hand. Let us be judicious and courageous enough to identify the root causes of the wide spread terrorism and take steps to eradicate it by addressing the basic issues."
