AIMMM on Delhi Wakf Board as Custodian of Jama Masjid
AIMMM Welcomes Recognition of Delhi Wakf Board by the High Court as Custodian of Jama Masjid
Hopes Better Maintenance and Management Directly under the Wakf Board
Suggests Formation of National Advisory Committee of Eminent Muslims
Opposes Declaration of Jama Masjid as Protected Masjid under the ASI
New Delhi, 27 May, 2005:
Shri Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim
Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
“The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) welcomes the recognition of the Delhi Wakf Board by the Hon’ble High Court as the sole custodian of the Jama Masjid, Delhi with proprietary and executive management rights. The AIMMM expresses the hope that the Wakf Board shall muster the political will to assert its rights and put an end to the long mismanagement of the Masjid, particularly the control of its affairs by a particular family.
The AIMMM suggests that apart from forming a high level Managing Committee, in view of the historic and national importance of the Jama Masjid, the Wakf Board should form a Advisory Committee consisting of Muslims of national eminence who are experts in law, administration, architecture, urban planning etc.
The AIMMM, however, reiterates its view that the Wakf Board should not agree to the take over of the Jama Masjid by the ASI in view of its black record in respect of the Masjids under its so-called protection in the country and particularly in Delhi and its non-implementation of the Agreement of 1984 between the AIMMM and the Government of India on the Performance of Namaz in Protected Masjids.
The AIMMM demands that the ASI should first recognize the Wakf character of all protected Masjids and associate the State Wakf Boards with their maintenance and protection and allow them to arrange Namaz in the Masjids wherever necessary and feasible.”
