Farmington Hills, Michigan May 25, 2005: The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) today expressed deep sadness at news of the death of Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs and actor Sunil Dutt after a heart attack at his home in Bandra, northwest Mumbai, on Wednesday morning. AFMI offers its sincere condolences to Mr. Sunil Dutt’s family his relatives and to the people of India.
We join India in mourning Mr. Sunil Dutt’s death. He was a man of principal, deeply committed to the secular and pluralistic ethos of India, its diversity and civility. All the people of India revered him. He stood for Human Rights issues and was always eager to land a hand for the downtrodden, irrespective of caste, creed, religion or ethnicity. He stood firm on issues of fairness and justice. He put the public interest over the high powered agendas of especial interest groups. His acting in the films has made him a legend in the film industry.
We, at AFMI were fortunate to have an association with him. He was the chief guest at AFMI’s International Convention held in Mumbai on December 27-28, 2003 and he had accepted to attend as a chief guest at AFMI’s Annual Convention in September 2005. AFMI and his organization, Nurgis Dutt foundation, had worked together on educational projects especially for the children of Gujarat genocide victims.
Union Minister Sunil Dutt was an out standing public servant and a fine diplomat. He will be greatly missed by people in India as well as abroad. We at AFMI will greatly miss him.
