Nellie Massacre: MOEMIN requests Sonia Gandhi to public contents of Tiwari Commission
25th April 2005
Smt. Sonia Gandhi,
Hon’ble Congress President,
10 Janpath, New Delhi
Respected Sonia ji,
In the post-independence history of communal violence in India, Nellie in Assam is the only place, which had seen the massacre of 3,300 innocent Muslims on a single day in the year 1983. The incident is known as the Nellie Massacre.
It is believed that the massacre took place on the instigation of the Sangh Parivar just because the Bengali speaking Muslims had refused to boycott the election call given by the Asom Gana Parishad, in Assam, and had voted overwhelmingly for the Congress Party in the elections.
The government had appointed Tiwari Commision to probe the massacre and in the year 1984, the
Commission submitted its report but unfortunately the then Saikia Government decided not to published its findings and the policy of putting it under carpet is being followed by every successive government in Assam.
It is an irony that out of 688 cases filed against the culprits and murderers of the
Nellie
massacre, more than fifty percent of the cases i.e, 378 cases were closed because of lack of evidence & the AGP people closed around 300 cases when they took the reigns of government in Assam. It is also important to mention that the affected families of the massacre were given just
Rs 2000 as compensation by the then state government.
We earnestly request you to kindly direct the State Government of Assam to immediately make public the contents of the Tiwari Commission and to set up a SIT to review the opening of the closed cases of the massacre, in the interest of the justice. It is also requested that the State government be advised to
announce a substantial amount as ex-gratia & invite the claims of the effected families for loss of life.
With respectful regards,
Navaid Hamid
