Muslims Condemn Bounty Offer to Kill Danish Cartoonist

Washington DC: We Indian Muslims in North America have learned with much regret that a Muslim minister in the Uttar Pradesh Government has made a public announcement to pay a bounty of Rupees 51 crore (US$11.50 million approx) to anyone who will kill the Danish cartoonist who made the derogatory cartoon of Prophet Mohammad. On behalf of 150,000 Indian Muslims in America, we categorically condemn Mr Haji Yaqoob Quraishi, the said Muslim politician, for this most reprehensible and criminal action.

We appeal to Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh to immediately dismiss Haji Yaqoob Quraishi from the Uttar Pradesh ministerial cabinet and to arrest him and institute a criminal court case against him for inciting the Muslim community to violence.

Islam categorically condemns all acts of violence against anyone. The efforts of Mr Haji Yaqoob Quraishi and a few others to incite the Muslim population to violence by exploiting the name of Prophet Mohammad, is a most despicable act worthy of condemnation by all including Muslims.

Muslims all over the world are organizing peaceful protests against the derogatory cartoons and are receiving the support of a large number of non-Muslims to stop such provocative and sacrilegious activities against Islam. They are also receiving global interfaith support of all civilized people in this quest. Islam asks Muslims to respect prophets and religious leaders of all religions and to not make derogatory comments about any religion. (February 19, 2006)
