Political Parties mum in UP on Urdu in Education and Administration
PRESS STATEMENT
No Party in UP Speaks on Place of Urdu in Education & Administration
Constitutional & Human Rights of Urdu-speaking Minority Ignored
AIMMM Appeals to Secular Parties to Undo Apathy Towards Urdu
New Delhi, 7 April, 2007: The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has taken note of the fact that nearly all secular parties contesting elections in Uttar Pradesh have supported provision of reservation for Muslims in public employment and education, having accepted in the light of the Sachar Committee Report that they indeed constitute a Backward Class in Uttar Pradesh.
However, The AIMMM also notes the absolute silence of all of them on giving due place to Urdu in education and administration in the State, in which it was born & from which it stand exiled. None even promise its use as medium of primary instruction for the Urdu-speaking children or its teaching through schools as a mother tongue or a guarantee that in a Urdu-knowing citizens may write to the state and receive a reply in his mother tongue.
In fact, none of the three major secular parties – the SP, the BSP and the Congress – have raised this question. Some question has been raised about Urdu teachers and
translators. But, no question has been asked about the total number of sanctioned posts of Urdu teachers and the number of posts being vacant. Similarly, no one has asked for the number of sanctioned posts of Urdu translators and the number of vacant posts. Nor has any public debate been held about the manner in which Urdu teachers and translators are being discriminated against and misutilised.
The AIMMM feels that the Urdu-speaking community in Uttar Pradesh has been the victim of deliberate cultural genocide by successive governments and the questions relating to Urdu are pushed under the carpet because all hands are tainted.
The AIMMM appeals to all secular parties to abide by the letter and spirit of the Constitution and give Urdu, the second most widely spoken language in the State and the 5th in the country as a whole, its due.
