US Muslims Request CBI Enquiry into Aligarh Muslim University Disturbances

30 April 2007 Washington DC: We the USA based Indian Muslims are very disturbed about recent happenings at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh. A wave of extreme lawlessnes is sweeping over the sprawling campus of this century old very distinguished university. Two students have been murdered in cold blood within a month at the campus by violent hooligans. The Vice-Chancellor and Proctor of the University have been forced to resign. On the eve of the final examinations the hooligans masquerading as students are demanding postponement of the examination and permission to delinquent students who did not attend classes in most of the academic year, to appear in the examination.

A set of hooligans that includes a few students supported by a few teachers and university staff members are using violent methods to paralyze the functioning of the university and to force the university Administration to grant them special privileges. Some of them have grabbed university property illegally and some hooligan non-students are occupying rooms in hostels at the university. These miscreants are well armed and routinely threaten students, teachers and administrative staff.

Most studnets and teachers at the University are serious students and teachers interested in serious academic pursuit. But they are being prevented from doing so by a handful of hooligan elements. We appeal to India's President and Prime Minister to immidiately institute an independent enquiry by the Central Bureau of Intelligence (CBI) into the above very harmful situation at the Aligarh Muslim University and implement the CBI findings expeditiously. We appeal to the Government of India to take effective steps to save AMU from harm and restore a healthy academic atmosphere at AMU.
