and Christian Dalits in SC List
AIMMM Requests Government to Publish Full Report and Implement its Recommendations forthwith
New Delhi, 23 May, 2007: Syed Shahabuddin, President of the All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM), has issued the following Statement:
‘The National Commission for Religious and Linguistic Minorities, with Justice S. C. Mishra as Chairman has submitted its Report to the Prime Minister on 21 May , 2007. Neither the text has yet been published, nor even an authoritative press release has been issued. However, quoting government sources, the national press has revealed some interesting recommendations.
First of all, the AIMMM requests the government to release the Report and place it in public domain for avoiding confusion.
Pending official confirmation, the AIMMM welcomes the following
recommendations:
(i) Earmaking 15% of government jobs and seats in educational institutions for minorities, out of which 10% exclusively for the Muslim Community.
(ii) Alternatively, earmaking 8.4% out of existing OBC quota of 27% for minorities, of which 6% exclusively for Muslim OBCs.
(iii) Extending benefit of reservation to Dalit converts to Christianity and Islam and repealing the clause relating to religious qualification in the Constitution (SC) Order, 1950.
(iv) Rejecting recognition of Linguistic Minorities as Backward Classes.
(v) Levying a cess on Wakf incomes for educational purpose.
The AIMMM has reservation on non-recognition of Linguistic Minorities as Backward Classes and feels that they should be considered, subject to the same criteria as the other Backward Classes for determining the fact and level of backwardness, state by state.
As for the other 4 recommendation the AIMMM welcomes them and hopes that the government shall accept and implement them forthwith in the light of the conclusions of the Sachar Committee which had determined the level of backwardness of the Muslim community as a whole as close to that of SC/ST and had also proposed inclusion of Christian and Muslim Dalits in the list of SC’s, eligible for reservation under the Order of 1950.’
