Gurjars and call for their inclusion in ST list
PRESS STATEMENT
Dausa Firing on Gurjars Condemned
AIMMM Demands Expeditious Inclusion of Gurjars in ST List
Also Reiterates its Suggestion for Development Census and Categorisation of SC’s and ST’s on par with
OBC's.
New Delhi, 30 May, 2007: The All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) strongly condemns the brutal firing on un-armed Gurjars in Dausa(Tonk) by the Rajasthan Police on 29 May, which took 16 lives. The Gurjars were agitating for inclusion in the ST list, as promised by the BJP on the eve of Assembly Election, 03.
The Gurjars are prima facie eligible for recognition as ST, even though some of them have settled down and are not leading a nomadic life.
The Gurjars are not confined to one state, but spread over several states. The AIMMM, therefore urges the Centre to consider their demand as expeditiously as possible.
To eliminate rivalry among different Backward Classes, the AIMMM reiterates its suggestion for urgent Development Census of all social groups, which would help in determining their eligibility for reservation and their quota.
The AIMMM also considers that the Union to move the Supreme Court to permit categorisation of SC’s & ST’s on par with the OBC’s, as all three are social conglomerates.
The AIMMM offers its condolence and sympathy to the bereaved families and demands a judicial enquiry and due compensation for the loss of life. It also appeals to the Gurjars to wage a peaceful struggle for achieving their objectives.
