AIM's letter to attorney General of US

Honorable Mr John Ashcroft
Attorney General of US, Department of Justice
Room 4400, 950 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, DC 20530 - 0001

Subject: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) (World Hindu Council)

Dear Mr Attorney General,
The VHP, is an organization of Hindus, headquartered in India, with branches in various countries, including US. VHP, which was founded about 40 years ago to promote Hindu religion, has unfortunately over the years been transformed into a militant & violent organization. In the mid -1980s, VHP joined its sister Hindu political party, the Bharti Janata Party (BJP), to campaign for the removal of several ancient mosques in India, and replace them with Hindu temples.

Since then these two groups have organized countless large scale riots against India’s Muslim and Christian minorities in various cities in India, in which thousands of innocent Muslims and Christians have been killed and their houses, businesses, places of worship have been destroyed.

The most glaring example of VHP’s terrorist activities occurred in December 1992 when they organized the demolition of the 450 year old Babri mosque in Ayodhya, a city about 400 miles east of New Delhi, and simultaneous riots in several major cities e.g. Bombay, Surat, Ahmedabad, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Kanpur etc. About 4,000 innocent Muslims were reported killed, and properties of Muslims worth several hundred million dollars was burnt or destroyed. In 1999, VHP cadres destroyed several Christian churches and schools and killed many pastors and missionaries, in Gujrat, Orissa and other states.

For several years now VHP is continuing its violent campaign to build a Hindu temple at the site of the demolished Babri mosque in Ayodhya (UP), in violation of the ruling of the Supreme Court of India, that has mandated that this issue will be decided by the court of law. In the last few weeks their campaign has resulted in large scale violence against Muslims in various cities in the state of Gujrat, with over 300 Muslims reported killed.

For over a decade now, VHP has branches in US, with their headquarter in the state of Connecticut. VHP is registered as a charitable organization under IRS Section
501-3-C. Every year VHP (USA) collects millions of dollars in tax-exempt donation from Hindus living in US. Every year top leaders of VHP visit US for fundraising campaigns. These funds are used directly for VHP’s violent campaigns to terrorize Muslims and Christians in India and to attack their places of worship.

In the name of the hallowed American tradition of justice and rule-of-law, and in view of the extensive terrorist activities of VHP for over a decade, we appeal to you to declare VHP a terrorist organization, freeze their assets and ban them from operating in US. Thanking you in anticipation of a fair and prompt action on your part.

Thank you
For Board of Directors of
The Association of Indian Muslims of America
Washington DC.
