SIR SYED AS A POLTICAL LEADER
By M Tauheed, Aligarh

Indian Muslim Political Conference organized a public meeting on 17th of October 2002 to mark the birthday of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. This meeting was held in the Serai Rehman area of Aligarh and was attended by intellectuals as well as the common populace. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Saleem Peerzada said that it was for the first time that Sir Syed has been taken
out of the confines of the University to be discussed amongst the masses. He said that Sir Syed was the first political leader of Indian Muslims after the fall of the Mughal empire. He asserted that just as Sir Syed established
the Mohammedan Educational Conference for the uplift of the Muslims, the Indian Mulsim Political Conference has been established to work for the political empowerment of the Muslims. He further stated that political empowerment of the Muslims was the main motive when Sir Syed established the institution at Aligarh. He emphasized the need for viewing the Aligarh
Movement in its true perspective. Dr. Syed Ali Amir and Dr. Ariful Islam also talked at length on the different aspects of the mission of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan.
