Lecture on National Security and Human Rights
The Milli Gazette, December 6, 2004
The Central Government has tabled a bill in Parliament for repeal of POTA. It stands acknowledged that the provisions of POTA have been grossly misused in the name of National Security. However, there are other draconian laws which continue to be in operation and are being misused to deprive people of their basic human rights and to suppress popular legitimate movements. The 9th Champa lectures on 12th December,04 will suggest ways and means to build and strengthen public opinion for repeal of such laws. The urgent need for repeal of ‘Armed Forces Special Powers Act,1958’ will be stressed and a resolution in this regard will be considered for being presented to the Review Committee formed by the Central Government. A review of the ‘Human Rights situation’ in general, after the ouster of POTA, will be taken.
Speakers include NANDITA HAKSAR, TARUN KUMAR, PRASHANT BHUSHAN, HARISH DHAWAN, S.A.R.GEELANI.
Ms. TRIPTA WAHI will preside.
