Workshop on the Condition of Minorities in SAARC Countries
A group of activists in India including Parliamentarians, Academicians, Journalists, Peace activists have joined hands to convene a workshop of the organizations & activists working for the rights of minorities & Dalits in SAARC countries and the 'Condition of Minorities in SAARC Countries’, during 16-18 September, 2005 at Parliament House Annex, New Delhi.
Renowned Gandhian & Member of Parliament, Dr Nirmala Deshpande is the chair of the Committee organising the workshop.
So far around 30 activists from Bangladesh, Pakistan & Sri Lanka had consented to participate. We do hope that another 10-15 more would give their consent in near future.
The participants of the Workshop would be concentrating on the following issues:
1. Legal & Constitutional Rights of Minorities.
2. Educational Status of Minorities and Representation of Minorities in textbooks.
3. Socio-Economic Status & Rights of Minorities.
4. Ethnic violence, State Violence & security of the minorities.
5. Representation of Minorities in Public Services & Law Enforcement Agencies.
6. Media and the Minorities.
People interested in the rights and welfare of minorities are requested to attend this important initiative as no community in the whole region is in majority as it finds itself in minority or majority situation in one or the other parts of the South Asia.
We do hope that the initiative would be a mile stone for championing the causes of the minorities in future and would be instrumental in integrating peace, human rights activists and the civil society which work for the rights of
minorities in their respective countries.
