Ghosts of 9/11 and 7/7 visit Delhi
Jehadis, Islam has never sanctioned violence

Delhi is a global city and terrorism that struck us on 29 October too is a global phenomenon. The effects of contemporary Jehadi militancy span throughout the world from Madrid to Beslan, Akshardham to Ayodhya and Bali to Delhi and and many other places around the globe.
As a human and an Indian Muslim, my agonized heart broke and I wept that the devils struck innocents and darkened umpteen lives by killing and maiming innocents at a time when they were busy shopping for the festival of lights. I decided not to celebrate Eid this year.
Muslims must come out openly against terror outfits like Lashkar-e Toiba, Al-Qaida, Harkatul Ansar, Jaish-e Mohammed, Sipah-e-Sahaba and similar others, all hell-bent to desecrate peaceful co-existence and harmony.
Thanks to the Paradise-seeking jehadis, terror continues unabated visiting us at the railway stations, bus stops, trains, temples, markets and anywhere, no matter where we are.
Ideologically-networked LeT jehadis, who kill without mercy, specialize in suicide attacks and when cornered, fight to the finish. They get their strength from Al-Qaida. Its brainwashed carriers shatter the dignity of life, and time and again bring the profanities of a fanatic ideology to our living rooms as unsolicited news shows.
These radical jehadis influenced by Bin Laden?¦s hate ideology are part of its new network of terror that is an intricate web of insurgent groups which act autonomously and are difficult to track down. From 9/11 to 29/10, theirs is a bloody tale of hate and retribution as these faceless and trackless terrorists are brainwashed to kill.
Resents M Atyab Siddiqui, a Delhi-based Muslim lawyer that many of the terrorists acting in the name of Islam, cite Palestine, Chechenya, Iraq and Afghanistan to justify the killing of anyone. They have lost their moral compass. For them anyone who does not agree with their point of view, is an infidel and can be eliminated.
They also misinterpret verses from the Quran to justify their heinous crimes. Muslims must disassociate themselves from "Muslim" terrorism. We feel that those who have committed these satanic acts, have nothing to do with Islam. Sura Al-Baqara (Verse 114) of the Quran states that Allah dislikes those who indulge in arson, loot and killings. Sura Al-Kafirun (Chapter 30) says that "Lakum dinukum, wa liya deen (You follow your religion; I follow mine). Islam's very meaning is submission to the will and commandments of God.
Islam rejects violence in all its forms but the jehadis take that path without caring as to what impact it can have on the image of Islam and on common Muslims by making them the usual suspects. These elements do not read those Quranic verses which declare that taking the life of one innocent individual is equl to killing the whole Mankind. They are thoroughly blinded and see with a skewed vision. The jehadis use those verses in the Quran which are "contextual" and by twisting and bending them they act self-deceivingly as human bombs. Islam has no room for suicide either.
There are many verses in the Quran which are "contextual" in the sense that they are verses used during a war situation at a given time and are not of general nature. Take for example the verse, "Slay the pagans wherever you find them, seize them, beleaguer them, lie in wait for them with every stratagem" (9:5). These were revealed at a particular historical situation when the pagans of Arabia had declared war against Islam and Muslims. The period came to an end with the conquest of Mecca. No doubt, seemingly these verses call upon the believers to fight strongly but if taken out of context, they might appear to advocate violence at any time and some misguided Muslims are doing exactly that.
According to Houston, Texas-based Islamic scholar Mirza Faisal Beg, what is so abominable is that the extremists today select these (some twenty) verses only to feel "righteous" and to act "righteously". Frankly speaking, it is most abhorrent to attach such acts to the teachings of Prophet Muhammed who is known to be "Mercy unto the worlds", not only to the Muslims but the whole humanity and beyond.
The so-called jehadis have no right to misinterpret the verses to suit to their dastardly machinations as only major Islamic scholars have to be relied upon to find the right context of any Quranic verse. Exactly in line of these jehadis, is the mentality of the US which did not go seeking Israel for occupying Palestinian and other land land, although it did attack Iraq for aggression on Kuwait. This is how they interpret their war against terror to suit to their imperialist whims and crusader fancies.
Delhites with characteristic stoicism and a sense of sacrifice and inevitability, led by a prime minister who refuses to be defeated or deviated by the faceless terrorists, have got on with life. Of course, the very next day the crowds thronged the same markets of Paharganj, Sarojini Nagar and Govindpuri that were the targets of Saturday evening's blasts. There is no "backlash", no eruption of violence in ghettos in the multi-religious city with a sound Muslim population to the chagrin of the LeT terror masters who wish to create a civil war-like situation in India. Delhi could have witnessed 1984 Sikh riot-like situation but for the sensible Delhi and central leadership.
Muslims are at a crucial point today. It has been observed that people have turned away from militancy after they witnessed what was done in their name and of course what it did to their communities. We have seen this in Egypt where violence during 1988-98 devastated its economy and in Algeria where a decade-long war took more than 100,000 lives.
The London and Madrid terrorists lack the support of a 1.5 billion-strong Muslim Ummah. If they get it, they will flourish in their devilish aims. But without its support, the twisted ideology will wither and die away slowly. Need of the hour in Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai etc, is that the moment the community observes any suspicious person living in their neighbourhood, they must inform the local police. It is also important that the Muslim community itself develops a broad range of tactics from traditional counter-terrorist methods to softer strategies to destroy this jehadi trend.
Today, Islam itself is under scanner owing to so many voices unjustly claiming that the religion advocates violence. Not all of these voices are unjustified as people judge by what they see on the ground and today these terrorists are trying to usurp the the name of Islam.
Muslim voices of sanity ought to be loudly heard. We have to agree to the principle that killing of innocents cannot be justified irrespective of race, religion, place or ethnicity of victims. Many Muslims are guilty of not speaking against what happened in Darfur while many are also guilty of being sympathetic towards a despot like Saddam Hussein who was responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqis and Iranians. Many are also guilty of not speaking out against the unjust acts of Muslims against non-Muslims.
Nevertheless, there has been a movement from eminent Muslim theologians as there was a fatwa issued by 500 imams of various British mosques who condemned the London bombings as well as any other terrorist act. Similarly, 170 leading Islamic scholars and clerics from eight major schools of Islam (including Sunni and Shia) from 40 countries, issued a fatwa which forbade issuance and validity of any fatwa from obscurantist clerics justifying a wrong notion of "jehad" which means annihilating innocents.
An innocent life taken is same wherever it is taken. Finally, we repeat what the Indian premier Manmohan Singh said on 18 July 2005, that "there is no cause, root or branch that can justify the killing of innocent people."
