AFMI's Prestigious NRI Award for Faruqi, Bahauddin

USA - The American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin (AFMI) announced today that it has selected
Prof. K.M. Bahauddin of Cochin and Mr.Shamsur Rahman Faruqi of Allahabad for its prestigious Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and Mir Taqi Mir awards respectively.
K.M. Bahauddin is a prolific writer on history in several Malayalam newspapers. He was trained as an engineer taking an ME from Manchester University. He was instrumental in setting up Durgapur steel plant and later came to academics and then headed the Regional Engineering College in Calicut. He then became pro Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University and finally headed the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) in Delhi.
Prof.Bahauddin has been selected for the Sir Syed Award in recognition of his academic contributions as a head of the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration, his inspirational writings and his untiring efforts for the advancement in the field of education.
Distinguished Urdu critic, poet, and scholar Mr.Shamsur Rahman Faruqi is the author of numerous books and articles. His prominent publications include Sher, Ghair Sher, Aur Nasr, (1973) The Secret Mirror (in English, 1981), Ghalib Afsaney Ki Himayat Mein, (1989) Sher Shore Angez (in 3 volumes, 1991-93), Mir Taqi Mir 1722-1810 (Collected works with commentary and explanation), Urdu Ka Ibtedai Zamana (2001), Ganj-i-Sokhta (poetry) and Sawar Aur Doosray Afsanay (fiction). He has been hailed as the T.S.Eliot of Urdu criticism.
Mr.Faruqi has been selected for the Mir Taqi Mir Award for his outstanding multifaceted contributions and achievements in the cause of Urdu Language and Literature.
The awards will be conferred on the distinguished scholars at the 14th annual convention of AFMI to be held on Dec.24-25th at Rajendra Swaroop Center for Performing Arts in the historic city of Kanpur. Top ranking graduates of X and XII standards from each state of India will also be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.
convention will also feature academic sessions on the education of the Muslim girl child, Madrassa modernization and the relevance of Urdu medium education in India to be addressed by distinguished speakers from across India and the USA.
