Muslims
in Union Cabinet
The Milli Gazette
24 May 2009
We greet Mrs Sonia Gandhi, Dr Manmohan Singh and other UPA constituents
for forming the new secular democratic government at the centre. lt is now
admitted at all levels that Muslims voted overwhelmingly in favour of the
Congress Party and its allies in the 2009 Parliamentary elections.
However, it is little surprising that there is only one Muslim included
among the 20 cabinet members sworn in on 22 May, which is
disproportionately low. It is understood that finally there would be 67
members in the Union Cabinet, and therefore based on fair representation,
there should be at least 11 Muslim Ministers. This will be in keeping with
Sachar Committee recommendation and in fulfillment of the commitment made
by the UPA chairperson and the Prime Minister for a fair representation of
minorities at all the levels. While looking forward to Muslims empowerment
and its fair share in the public administration, We Wish the New
Government all Success.
