Asaduddin Owaisi

Hyderabad: Member of Parliament from Hyderabad and President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen Asaduddin Owaisi has been honoured with Sansad Ratna award 2014 for overall best performance in 15th Lok Sabha.

His speeches in Lok Sabha taking on national political parties and Union ministers alike with questions and empirical data have always made other Muslim parliamentarians look as non-existent.

Owaisi’s name was finalized along with seven other Lok Sabha members who had a total tally of above 1000 (debates+private bills+ questions) during the last five years’ period. The finalists for awards have been made as per the data released by PRS India on 10 December 2013 on the overall performance of 15th Lok Sabha.

Asaduddin Owaisi scored glowing 1080 questions in Parliament, far ahead with national average of 292. Although his 70% attendance was 6% less than average but again he overturned it by participating in 40 debates securing four points ahead of the national average.

Asaduddin, 44, who is representing Hyderabad for the second consecutive term, has emerged as leader among Muslim Lok Sabha members and also overscored his colleagues from his home state of Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Owaisi, who is vocal on Muslim issues from Kashmir to Assam, has gained wide respect nationally among Indian Muslims for his bold speeches in Lok Sabha. His community-consciousness is recognised in Parliament where major Muslim MPs are seen toeing party lines.

Recently Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh was caught in surprise by Owaisi’s ‘googly’ when he raised the issue of wakf properties during the tabling of the land acquisition bill in Parliament, forcing Mr. Jairam to admit his ministry’s mistake and to recognize wakf as a serious matter yet to be dealt in the bill.

Special Sansad Mahila Ratna award for women Lok Sabha members and Sansad Yuva Ratna award for young members is also going to be conferred.

In earlier years, annual Sansad awards were presented to the toppers under three categories (a) debates (b) private members bills and (c) questions. This year at the end of 15th Lok Sabha, a grand finale is planned to award best performing MP in over-all categories in last five years.
