M. A. Jameel Ahmed Award

Islamic Foundation Trust (IFT), Chennai, presented its “M. A. Jameel Ahmed Award” to two prominent personalities of Tamil Nadu. IFT had instituted “M. A. Jameel Ahmed Award” for outstanding personalities in Service to Humanity. The first award ceremony was organised on 1 February, 2014 at Rajah Annamalai Hall, Chennai.

The Chief guest, noted Tamil scholar Dr. Silampoli Chellappan, presented the award to Human Rights Activist PROF A. MARX for his remarkable contribution in the field of human rights since 30 years and MR. S. AHMED MEERAN for his remarkable contribution in the field of education. Further he felicitated the awardees and congratulated IFT for instituting this award. He said that it was his privilege to award the outstanding activists in the field of Human Rights and Education.

Prof. A. Marx served as a Professor of Physics for over 37 years. He was born on 4 October, 1949 at Papanadu, Tanjavur District. His father Mr. Antony Samy went to Malaysia and was one of the founders of the socialist movement there. Prof Marx could not go to school till his 4th grade, then he pursued his studies at government-run schools, colleges and universities. Since 30 years he has been striving to protect human rights. Now he is the Tamil Nadu State President of Peoples Union for Human Rights (PUHR) for Tamil Nadu Chapter and National Executive Member of National Confederation of Human Rights Organisation (NCHRO). He has penned more than 50 books mostly in the field of Human Rights. Islaamiyarukku Ethiraana Kattukathaikal (the allegations against Muslims), Naan Purinthu konda Nabikal (The Prophet: I understood), etc. are some of his important books. Prof Marx is among the first who visit people facing human rights violation and provides legal assistance to them. Prof A. Marx not only works in Tamil Nadu but has also visited Ayodhya, Odisha, Sri Lanka and other riot / communal violence hit areas.


Dr. JAMSHED KAMAL AMROHI, poet and intellectual was honoured with ‘Josh Malihabadi Award’ at an All India mushaira held at Amroha. Along with him, poet JAVED IQBAL was honoured with ‘Faiz Ahmad Faiz Award’ MASROOR JAUHAR was honoured with ‘Meer Taqi Meer Award’ and MIRZA SAJID AMROHI was honoured with ‘Ahmad Raza Khan Barelvi Award’.
NADEEM AKHTAR, Deputy City Qazi of Saharanpur has been selected by Nagar Shanti Samiti for being honoured this year with ‘Aman (Peace) Award’ in connection with Holi on the occasion of Holi Milan function to be held on 17 March. The amount of this Award will be Rs 5001 in cash, a shawl and a commendation certificate. President of the Award Committee said that Nagar Shanti Samiti gives this Award to a Muslim on the occasion of Holi and this Award i.e. Aman Award to a Hindu on the occasion of Eid Milan. He said that the objective behind this is that a religious festival should not be limited to one particular community and all communities should celebrate the festivals jointly.
TAHSEEN MUNAWWAR, noted journalist, news anchor, columnist, litterateur, poet and actor was honoured with ‘Madan Mohan Varma Memorial Award 2014’ by Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat in recognition of his services in the field of media and Urdu journalism. The Award was given to him at a function organised by journalists Association of Electronic and Print Media of Uttarakhand at Dehradun on 19 February.
BEKAL UTSAHI, famous Urdu, Hindi poet and former MP who has been honoured with many literary awards, has been honoured, along with 23 others, with ‘Yash Bharti Award’ by UP government. This Awards carries a cheque of Rs 5 lakh, a shawl and a certificate.
NASRUL HASAN HALI, a senior TV journalist was honoured with ‘Shining Image of India Gold Medal Award’ by All India Economy Survey Award Council at a function held in Delhi on 23 February.
MUSHIR ALTAF, a research scholar in AMU’s Agricultural Microbiology Department who read out his research paper in the International Conference on Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences held at Hyderabad on 28 February has been honoured with Best Paper Award Before this also he was honoured with Best Poster Presentation Award by the Association of Microbiologists of India at a function held at Rohtak (Haryana).  
The Mumbai-based Centre for Studies of Society and Secularism has been awarded the National communal harmony award, 2013. This award has been the collective result of hard work put in CSSS for the last twenty years under the leadership of its founder late Asghar Ali Engineer. His son Irfan Engineer now runs the institution while the chairperson is Prof. Ram Puniyani. The long journey that CSSS has been able to sustain is because of the support of its staff and donors who have shown tremendous trust and supported the cause for which CSSS has stood for and worked towards. Mr. S. AHMED MEERAN, Chairman of Unity Group of Schools, Chennai, is a B.Com graduate. Earlier, he worked in the Telephone department. He resigned from the government service in 1981 and started travel business. In 1985 he started The Professional Couriers which is now one of the top courier services in the country. He dedicated himself for services to humanity in general and for education in particular. He provides scholarships every year to hundreds of poor and needy students pursuing higher studies in the fields of Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicince, etc. He is also the Secretary of Organisation of Muslim Educational Institutes and Associations of Tamil Nadu (OMEIAT). This organization is supporting the poor and needy Muslim students for their higher studies.

CARAVAN Wins Dubai Award

Caravan Daily, the young online news magazine (, received its first accolade last month when it clinched the Dubai Shopping Festival Journalism Award in online media category. Caravan received the DSF 2014 Award for the Best Online Feature by Raziqueh Hussain. The DSF Media Awards were given away at a glittering ceremony marking the closure of the celebrated Shopping Festival.

Published on 2 January, 2014, the feature titled Dubai Catches ‘Em Young ( by Raziqueh Hussain, the former Khaleej Times journalist who is now based in Norway, talked about how the Dubai Shopping Festival reached out to children and young people.

“The Dubai Shopping Festival functions with the overall theme of ‘One World, One Family, One Festival,’ and offers every member of every family the best shopping and entertainment feel available in the region. More than 3,500 retail shops and 40 state of the art shopping malls offer huge discounts on international brands. With so much to see and do, it’s no surprise that attendance is in the 3.5 million range,” wrote Hussain.

“Locals love children and Dubai has long been attracting expat families, so the young are well catered for - many hotel crèches and clubs are used by non-guests. If your kid is a water baby, you might consider a day at a water park.”

The Indian journalist expressed her delight at winning the coveted DSF Award once again. This was her third DSF Award.     

Padma awardees

Of the 127 awardees of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, which were announced on  the eve of the 65th Republic day, no Muslim received the Padma Vibhusahn while Gulam Mohammed Sheikh (Art-Painting, Gujarat), Begum Parveen Sultana (Art-Classical Singing, Maharashtra), Prof Anisuzzaman (Literature and Education, Bangladesh) received Padma Bhushan. Padma Shri awardees are: Mohammad Ali Baig (Art-Theatre, Andhra Pradesh), Ustad Moinuddin Khan (Art-Instrumental Music-Sarangi Player, Rajasthan), Prof Hakim Syed Khaleefathullah (Unani Medicine, Tamil Nadu), Dr Naheed Abidi (Literature and Education, Uttar Pradesh), Parveen Talha (Civil Service, Uttar Pradesh).
