Mindset of Society needs to be changed: Patil

Lucknow: Prathiba Patil, former President of India, said that empowerment of women and effective check on criminal acts against them can only be possible if the mindset of our society is drastically changed and perverted minds of the so-called "old values" are dealt with firmly by social activists. She was addressing a select gathering of intellectuals at Raj Bhavan, representing Media Foundation and Sir Syed Scientific Society last month. Patil observed that not much can be done for the security and honour of women by laws and legislations alone. Only people like Raja Ram Mohan Roy can do this. In his time, he stoond up against old customs against women and succeeded in removing many ills of society.
Dr. Sultan Shakir Hashmi presented a Memorandum to Mrs Patil on behalf of Sir Syed Scientific Society. It contained several suggestions for the uplift of Indian Muslims including establishment of a University of Science and Technology in the name of Sir Syed and helping madarsas to start vocational training courses in their campuses. Mrs. Patil was pleased to receive a copy of the book "Plants of Quran" authored by Dr. M. I. H. Farooqi. She was happy to know that such work on the scientific aspects of Quranic plants is available.
