17 murders in five years in Gujarat’s temples

Gandhi Nagar: Gujarat’s minister of state for home affairs Praful Patel said in a written reply on 30 March in the state assembly in response to a question by Arjun Madhuwadia, Congress MLA that during the past five years there have been 17 murders of employees and officials and more than 900 cases of thefts and dacoities in temples and asharams of Gujarat.

He further said that from October 2005 to 30 September 2010 there have been 24 cases of attacks and 4 cases of attempts to murder in the temples and asharams of Gujarat. Giving the break-up figures he said that during this period there were 905 cases of theft, 30 cases of loot and 28 cases of dacoity in these temples and ashrams and that in each case most of the accused / culprits have been arrested and tried but many are still absconding.
