SAFDAR HUSSAIN KHAN, vice chairman of India Islamic Cultural Centre (Delhi) and former Sr. General Manager of India Trade Promotion Organisation has been appointed chairman of Delhi Minorities Commission (DMC) on 22 March by Delhi government. He took over his charge on 23 March. There are three members of DMC, two other members are Sardar Pashpener Singh and Michael Anthony, representing Sikh and Christian communities respectively.

Prof. MUHAMMAD IQBAL, a PhD holder in Urdu literature who is presently Head of Urdu Department at Maler Kotla’s Government College, has been appointed secretary of Punjab Urdu Academy at Maler Kotla (Punjab) by Punjab governor. He took over the charge of this post on 26 March. Born in Maler Kotla 56 ago, he is a sort of linguist, knowing Urdu, Hindi, English, Punjabi, Arabic and Persian and has written many books in Urdu and Punjabi. He is also the President of All India Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi Sangam and Vice President of All India Teachers Association.

SALEEM PARVEZ, JDU-MLC from Saaran district of Bihar has been appointed Deputy Chairman of Bihar’s Legislative Council. Election for this post was held in the Council but since no other MLC had filed his nomination paper, he was elected unanimously for the post. After his election chief minister Nitish Kumar, Council’s chairman Tara Kant Jha, deputy chief minister Sushil Modi (of BJP) and opposition leader Ghulam Ghaus escorted him to deputy chairman’s seat. It may be stated incidentally that Legislative Assembly is the lower house and Legislative Council is the upper house in state legislatures.

Prof. QAZI MAZHAR ALIof AMU’s Statistics and Operation Research Department has been appointed by VC Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis as Director of Computer Centre in place of Prof. Ikram Husain with immediate effect till further order. Among his duties as Director will be digitalisation of class rooms, looking after Egovernance, networking for teaching-learning, looking after wifi project, daily updating University’s website and other affairs of the Computer Centre. He will submit the progress report of these works to the VC by the 5th of every month.

Mrs. SAKINA KAMAL AMROHVI, a brilliant student, has been employed by a reputed British company as architectural consultant for IPL World Cup. It is significant to note that before this no Indian has been appointed for this post. About her appointment Sakina said that she will have to tour and inspect 13 different stadiums of this country and submit a report about the condition of their buildings etc. Daughter-in-law of Dr. Azim Amrohvi, she had rendered excellent service in last year’s Commonwealth Games held in Delhi.

Dr. SHADAB KHURSHID, Head of AMU’s Department of Geology by virtue of being the senior most of departmental heads has been appointed Member of University Court for 3 years or till the period he is head of his department. His appointment is in place of Dr. Afifullah Khan, whose term as Head of Zoology Department is completed.

Dr. SHAHID HASNAINwho was awarded Doctorate Degree by Meerut University for his research treatise on the noted poet and author Shaharyar, has been appointed Registrar of All India Urdu Taalim Ghar, Lucknow.

Dr. BASHIR AHMAD KHAN, former Pro-Chancellor of IGNOU has been elected National President of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) at its meeting held in Delhi attended by officers and delegates from 12 states of India. Mrs. Fatema Muzaffar, daughter of late MP from Tamil Nadu and party’s general secretary has been elected general secretary and Abdus Sattar Mujahid has been elected Vice President of IUML.

EBRAHIM FAHIMUDDIN SHEIKH, a 5-year old Indian boy living in Dubai became a millionaire overnight when he won a lottery in the February draw of National Bonds Corporation there on 22 March.

Mrs. ANWARA TAIMUR, a veteran Congress leader and former chief minister of Assam left Congress Party and joined Maulana Badruddin Ajmal’s All India Assam United Democratic Front (AIAUDF). Another senior Congress member and a former minister, Abdul Muqtadir Chaudhary also left this Party to join AIAUDF. Both these former Congress leaders were not given tickets for the forthcoming assembly elections in Assam.
