Muslim groups revolt against Congress in Bengal

Small Muslim political groups that were earlier with the Congress have now joined hands with the new front that is likely to field its candidate against Congress and the Trinamool. These smaller groups like Siddiqullah Choudhury’s People’s Democratic Conference of India (PDCI), Saifuddin Choudhury’s People’s Democratic Front (PDF), West Bengal State Muslim League, Lok Janshakti Party, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Revolutionary Party of India etc are now jointly likely to contest 70-80 seats in the state. These Muslim groups parted ways after they were denied tickets by the Congress. Siddiqullah, who is convenor of the new front said, “Both Jamiat-ulama-i-Hind and Jamaat-i-Islami will support us morally and financially. We have 350 panchayat members and 10 lakh voters across 11 districts. Congress must understand that one-man party and one-man shows don’t go too far in politics. If pride will bring about the downfall of the Left, Trinamool, too, is showing similar signs of arrogance.” Muslims are about 25 percent of the total electorate in West Bengal.
