Godhra case: two months time given

Ahmedabad: State High Court has adjourned the proceedings of confirmation of death sentence to 11 persons in the sensational Sabarmati Express deaths. Special Court had sentenced to death 11 persons for the death of 59 passengers of Sabarmati Express in 2002. As per the law, High Court has to confirm the death sentence before the order of lower court can be executed.

Divison bench of Justice R R Tripathi and Justice P P Bhatt gave two month time to the Special Court to prepare documents to be submitted to the Gujarat High Court. Last month, Gujarat High Court had asked the special judge P R Patel to submit documents relating to the case. The Special Judge, however, sought time, saying that documents were voluminous and photocopying would need some time. Some of the documents were old and not fully legible even after photocopying. They needed to be retyped, the special court judge told the High Court. On March 1, Special Court had awarded death sentence to 11 and life imprisonment to 20.
