Syed Shahabuddin Questions Nomination by Ahmad Bukhari of his Son as his Successor to the Post of Naib Imam, Nomination is Un-Islamic, Illegal and Violates Standing Judicial Order.

New Delhi: 20 November, 2014:  Syed Shahabuddin, IFS (Retd.) ex-MP, former President of All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat has issued the following press note:

Imam Syed Ahmad Bukhari of Jama Masjid, Delhi has announced the nomination of his son as the Naib Imam on 22 November, 2014, thus following the example set by his  father, a decade earlier. Then I had expressed my reservation and issued a Press Note questioning the religious, legal and administrative position. I repeat it to remind the people.

The Jama Masjid Delhi is a great Muslim heritage, a national monument of historic importance. Under the law it is a Wakf property and comes under the management of Delhi Wakf Board. The Board meets all recurring expenses including the salary of the Imam, the Naib Imam, and the supporting staff. Major expenses on its repair and maintenance are met by the Central Government as a national monument.

The Wakf Board manages practically all Masjids in Delhi by appointing Managing Committees. But Imam Ahmad Bukhari refused the formation of any such Committee and appointed his own Advisory Council, consisting of his cronies and hangers on. The Jama Masjid has additional income from visitors, donations, rents and parking but Imam refuses to account for them to the Wakf Board.

Imam of a Masjid in Islam is appointed by the authorities in consultation with eminent persons who pray regularly in the Masjid. Just as in the case of Khilafat, Bukhari’s  claim by virtue of descent has no religious basis.

The Delhi High Court  ordered Imam Bukhari to accept Board’s authority and render full account  of the income and expenditure of the Masjid to the Board. But Imam Ahmad Bukhari has not done so, thus violating the judicial order. Unlike his father he has not even informed the Board of his intention. Imam Bukhari has been neck-deep in politics and playing party politics. The Masjid is not his family property or its pulpit a political gaddi.

In conclusion I appeal to the community to reject his move and liberate the Masjid. [End]
