High Court directive ignored: animals sacrificed in Orissa

Kendupada: The Orissa High Court had imposed a ban on animal sacrifices at the Devi temples. Inspite of this ban, 122 animals were killed at a temple in the Mahakalpada police jurisdiction on the occasion of Sambadakshmi festival. The animals were sacrificed in a ruthless manner.

According to ancient beliefs, orthodox devotees believe that such sacrifices ward off imminent calamites and make their lives happy and blissful. Boatmen belonging to Baharasai have been offering animal sacrifices for hundreds of years. An activist of an Organisation for protection of animals reports that the district administration, though aware of these practices, maintains a low profile.
