Mushawarat protests against the maltreatment of senior cleric

New Delhi, 22 January, 2015: The All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, umbrella body of Indian Muslim organizations, strongly condemned and protested against the illegal detention of the senior scholar Maulana Yasin Akhtar Misbahi by the Special Cell on Wednesday, 21 January.

Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan, President of AIMMM and Maulana Ataur Rahman Qasmi, General Secretary of AIMMM, visited Maulana Misbahi this morning at his residence and conveyed to him the whole community's support to him and its displeasure at the maltreatment meted out to him at the hands of the Special Cell the previous day.

Dr. Zafarul-Islam Khan has further written to the Home Minister, Lt. Governor Delhi and Police Commissioner Delhi protesting against the illegal action of the Special Cell and demanding a high-level enquiry into the whole episode and punishment of the guilty officers.

Following is the full text of the AIMMM letter:
22 January, 2015
Dear Sir,

I wish to bring to your kind notice that yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, 21 January, 2015, the respected and renowned Muslim scholar, Maulana Yasin Akhtar Misbahi, a religious teacher, author, editor and publisher, was asked by the Jamia Nagar Police Station to come to the PS to answer some queries. He obliged and came to the PS with some of his students. There he was told that he is required by the Special Cell of IB’s Lodhi Road branch. He was pushed into a car and driven away to the Special Cell office in Lodhi Road while his students were rudely prevented from accompanying him. At the Special Cell office, the 70-year-old Maulana was interrogated about his activities, his madrasa in Zakir Nagar and the phone calls he receives form abroad. Thereafter, he was allowed to go home probably because hundreds of Jamia Nagar residents had gathered outside the Jamia police station and continued their protest for hours demanding the release of the Maulana. They did not disperse until the news came that he has been released.

We wish to register our displeasure and protest at the whole incident which violates citizens’ human rights. We would like to request you to institute a high-level enquiry to establish (1) who was responsible for dragging a very senior religious personality to the Special Cell office by deceit, (2) did the Special Cell obtain the required prior legal authorisation to call/interrogate such a person by calling him to their office, (3) to punish the officers responsible for this sad episode, and (4) offer an apology to the  revered Maulana.

Yours sincerely
Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan
