Sohrab of Gorakhpur murdered by members of Hindu Yuva Vahini: PUCL

Allahabad: People’s Union for Civil Liberties of Uttar Pradesh in a letter to President, National Human Rights Commission has informed of the murder of Sohrab (son of Jameel Khan) of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh on 24 March 2011.

PUCL in its own investigation has learnt about the possible role of people associated with Hindu Yuva Vahini in the murder of Sohrab along with the motive: intension to loot and dacoity. Member of PUCL during their investigation came to know that Sohrab was working with Rathi Hechri in Haryana. One branch of Rathi Hechri is also at Bargadwa in Gorakhpur. Sohrab on 24 March left for his home to attend the marriage of his buwa (sister of father) on 26 March. At that point of time he was carrying Rs 40000, new clothes and some other baggage. He began his journey on 24 March by a truck which belonged to Rathi Hechri. When he reached Khalilabad around 7 in the evening Sohrab talked to his elder brother Nadeem on the mobile of the driver to inform him that he would possibly reach Gorakhpur around 10 pm. When Sohrab’s brother went to receive him he came to know that Sohrab had already left from there. His brother Nadeem thought that he might have left before he reached there or he went to meet his friends or relatives nearby.

But, on 25 March, he came to know that Sohrab was killed. On 25 March, Vijay Kumar son of Kailash in his written complaint registered at Bhagwanpur Thana (Chiluwatal) (number 1821/11) which says that at around 3 am, an unidentified man entered the house of Ram Bhawan and the people of the area thrashed him for they thought that he had entered to steal and thereafter allowed him to go. He was seen walking along the compound of the nearby mandir. At around 2 pm he was found dead.

PUCL during investigation came to know that members of Hindu Yuva Vahini active in Gorakhpur for a long time involved in his murder and members of this group are also believed to be involved in various cases of a similar nature in the past. Police at Chiluwatal arrested Chandan Gorakhpuri and some others in this connection but later on let them off at the instance of Yogi Adityanath, BJP, MP from Gorakhpur who is patron of Hindu Mahasabha and Hindu Vahini. Recently he is alleged to have been involved in some terror activities in one way or the other. PUCL in this regard demands from the National Human Right Commission to set up a high level inquiry in order to ascertain the nature and motive behind the crime.
