NGOs doubt effectiveness of NHRC

Some 200 non-governmental and civil organisations under the banner of All India Network of NGOs and individuals working for human rights institutions at various levels have strongly raised their protest and at the same time have also questioned the effectiveness of the Human Rights Commission in providing justice to the victims and being a watchdog for the rights of people of India.

The protest has come at a time when National Human Rights Commission is to seek re-accreditation before the International Co-ordination Committee of National Human Rights Institutions in Geneva in a month from now. The points on which these groups are raising question marks are on the very structure of the NHRC, its functioning, composition and appointment procedure at various levels.

The report released by former Chief Justice of India JS Verma said, “The NHRC’s failures stem from a failure to act from a relentless refusal to plan.”
