Syed Vicaruddin gets “Star of Jerusalem”

Hyderabad: In a significant milestone in India-Palestine relationship, President of Palestine Mahmood Abbas has conferred the order of the ‘Star of Jerusalem’, one of the highest honours of Palestine, upon Syed Vicaruddin, Chairman of the Indo-Arab League Hyderabad and the Chief Editor of Rahnuma-e-Deccan Urdu Daily.

To offer the honour, the President of Palestine sent a high-level delegation led by President’s Advisor and the Palestine Supreme judge Dr. Mahmoud Sidqi Al-Habash, Ambassador of Palestine in India, Adnan Abu Alhaijaa and Minister at Embassy of Palestine Saleh Fhied Mohammed. The honour was offered to Mr Vicaruddin on 16 May at his residence.

Speaking at a press  conference here on 14 May, Dr. Mahmood Habbash said “I am honoured to be representing the President of the State of Palestine to felicitate Mr. Syed Vicaruddin with this award. The President has personally instructed the honour to be offered in acknowledgment of “over four decades of Mr Vicaruddin’s continued, principled support for the Palestinian struggle for statehood, sovereignty and self-determination”.

Dr Habbash said that Palestine has received strong support from India, particularly through Mr.Vicaruddin’s organization Indo-Arab League Hyderabad, which kept the flag flying for over four decades in support of the Palestinian cause for freedom and peace. “The award is a tribute in appreciation of Mr.Vicaruddin’s efforts and is a rare occasion in the history of India and Palestine ties”, he added.

Speaking on the current situation in the war-torn Palestine, he said “Palestinians are fighting to reclaim their homeland, and will one day stop living as refugees on their own soil”. “Sooner or later we will achieve our goal of liberating our homeland and establishing our state”, he said, adding “when President Mr.Mahmood Abbas learnt about Mr. Syed Vicaruddin’s road accident enroute a public meeting in Gulbarga town which was held to express solidarity with the people of Palestine in December 2014, he sought that we visited Hyderabad to see Mr. Syed Vicaruddin and personally enquire about his health and recovery after the accident.”

Syed Vicaruddin expressed his gratitude to the delegation and assured the Palestinian guest of continued solidarity and support with Palestine in the future. He offered a brief introduction of the proposed Indo-Arab Cultural Centre, which will house a library, a cultural gallery, reading room, and a mosque. The centre will come out on road 10, Banjara Hills in Hyderabad.


The Palestinian Ambassador Adnan Abu Alhaijaa encouraged religious tourism and exhorted for solidarity with Palestine in the cause of its liberation and realization of statehood adding that “India’s friendship with Palestine is long and historical and will grow even stronger in the years to come”.
