The emerging threat of “Patriotism”

Common sense says that what happened or is happening in Kashmir can’t be imagined in a Hindu majority state even if the insurgents went on to kill scores of police personnel and civilians for, they are the ones to have been bestowed upon the sacred crown of patriotism, a simple but made out to be forbidden and horrifying word for the Muslims of India.

There was a time when patriotism used to be the last refuge of a scoundrel. Now, with India’s maturing and world renowned democracy, it seems, scoundrels have become the last refuge of patriotism. Great expectations stemming from over confidence often lead to disastrous consequences, which was quite evident from not so unexpected exhibition of hullabaloo and furore by an impatient and adamant VHP and RSS. Since the hearing about the proprietorship of the Babri Mosque site began in Allahabad High Court, VHP’s Ashok Singhal and Praveen Togadia, the front runner in the Gujarat carnage of 2002 and Mohan Bhagwat of RSS had categorically announced that "Man made" judiciaries can’t decide the fate of Babri mosque site and that if the judgment came against them (VHP and RSS) there could be a nationwide protest involving mass violence. Mass violence? Against whom? And despite the presence of hundreds of thousands of Police, Paramilitary and CRPF forces around? Are we to believe that India is a jungle country bereft of any forces or judiciary? Or a paralyzed nation, systematically institutionalized to surrender to the evil designs of communal forces? Who could know what it means better than the "Congress voting and Congress believing" Muslims who lost their three thousand brothers and sisters in just one spat of violence in Gujarat and Congress president Sonia Gandhi contended herself with just one solacing word ‘Maut ke Saudagar? It therefore was apparent, either VHP and RSS have grown larger than our judiciary and acquired the rights to abuse its (judiciary’s) rights or the very system finds itself ‘impotent’ when it came to dealing with these "Patriotic" organizations who, over the years have succeeded in justifying raw violence against Muslims as an act of sheer ‘Patriotism’.

But those who know age old Brahminical tactics knew from the day first that RSS and its core leaders (Brahmins) were interested neither in the demolition of Babri nor the construction of Ram temple. Their core aim was only to sabotage the "Mandal Commission Movement" guaranteeing equal rights and reservation to all underprivileged sections of the society. It was certain, had V. P. Singh succeeded in the implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations, we would have been witnessing true spirit of democracy in India.

But, perhaps, India was not destined to witness that glorious moment aka true democracy. Things eventually came to such a pass that India, world’s biggest democracy, could hope for the first prize for. She seems to have been constantly changing the definition of democracy as and when needed and suited to its "Majority appeasing" interests. A case in point was the so reluctant, indifferent and belated acknowledgement by its home minister, a Tamil Brahmin, about a "common knowledge" Saffron Terror, well documented even by the mainstream media. Despite more than needed evidences to the claim in his kitty, gathered by the NIA, the Minister sounded as if he were committing an "Original Sin" by calling spade a spade. Funnily enough, not a single statement by any secular party leader came seconding or supporting his view point.

What is more appalling is the pace with which India grew in taste and sophisticacy. Previously it found suffice to instigate riots and deprive Muslim youths from public sector job opportunities. Now it believes in ruining his life completely by accusing him of terrorism. Since the first blast in Nanded till the last in Pune’s German bakery, our system was quick to name any Muslim youth or outfit in the blast, despite having known the real culprits. But the problem was that the culprits, unwittingly (or wittingly?) protected by the system that ought to include the ‘liberal’ media, happened to be staunch patriots and can’t be doubted for their intentions and actions.

Frankly speaking, this one single word "patriotism" seems to have been transformed into a nightmarish dream for the alienated minorities of India and has become an effective tool in the hands of "Eternal Patriots" for waging war like situation against their favorite target, Muslims. This is the word that has literally been abused, since independence, by the majorities of even Nehruvian era to fulfill their cherished dreams against minorities and get away scot free. This is the reliable beehive that has, over the decades, provided complete protection to the "celebrated" killers and murderers because they were carrying the torch of patriotism.

What really surprises one is that while corporate India and its much glorified TV channels with a bunch of over rated intellectuals, are celebrating and debating India’s 9% GDP growth, it sounds ironic rather sadistic or even "unpatriotic" to talk about 45% population living under BPL (with Rs. 20 wages per day) or 15% Muslim minority in a state of shock and awe, the powerful re-emergence of Khalistan Movement in Punjab or farmers committing suicide every second hour.
