Hurriyat leader Abbas Ansari’s “expulsion”

Hurriyat Conference (M), led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has adopted a wait and watch policy vis-à-vis the expulsion of Itihaad-ul-Muslimeen (IuM) from its fold. The conglomerate has asked IuM to clarify its position vis-à-vis the meeting of its patron, Maulana Abbas Ansari, with the interlocutors appointed by Centre.

The issue came up for discussion during the executive committee meeting of the amalgam on 23 April. "We’ve already sent a letter to IuM on the issue. They are yet to come up with reply. No decision regarding termination of IuM from Hurriyat would be taken in haste," a spokesman said.

IuM was suspended from Hurriyat (M) after its patron met the interlocutors at his residence on April 20. Next day Ansari retorted back saying that he is now free after his expulsion from amalgam.

Mirwaiz, however, warned "no individual or group of amalgam would be allowed to work against the interests of the people." In its executive council meeting on 28 April, Hurriyat (M) had decided to go for further deliberations over the issue before taking a final decision.

"Kashmir issue can be solved only when India, Pakistan and the genuine leadership of Kashmir gets engaged in a meaningful dialogue. Interlocutors can just make recommendations," said Hurriyat spokesman. He accused the interlocutors of dividing people on sectarian lines.

Terming the suspension of IuM from Hurriyat (M) as unconstitutional, Masroor Abbas Ansari, president of party, said on 27 April that during his talks with interlocutors its party patron had reiterated the Hurriyat’s stand that dialogue at prime ministerial level alone can solve Kashmir issue.
