JKLF’s Yasin Malik arrested, released

Tension gripped the entire locality in and around Maisuma on 28 April as JKLF chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik, was arrested while leading a protest demonstration against the detention of a local youth.

Scores of youth took to streets to protest the arrest of a JKLF member, Ashiq Hussain Dar. They alleged Dar has been booked under false charges. As the JKLF chairman joined protesters, a posse of police and security forces present on the spot asked Malik to leave. He declined and this led to an altercation between the security forces and JKLF activists. Malik along with his two associates was arrested and lodged in a nearby police station.

Within no time, youth took to streets and started pelting stones on police and security forces. As protesters offered stiff resistance, security forces lobbed teargas canisters that triggered pitched battles. Immediately, shopkeepers downed their shutters and business came to a standstill.  

A police spokesman said that Malik along with some of his associates was arrested after they disrupted traffic. "A complaint was lodged by Ishfaq Hussain Shah, a driver at police station Maisuma that he was attacked by some unidentified person. The complainant alleged that he was beaten and some cash snatched from him.

The spokesman added that police started investigation and complainant identified Dar as assailant. Police arrested Dar. Malik along with his associates went inside the police station Maisuma and intimidated and attacked policemen besides ransacking some items of office claimed the police. Later, JKLF chairman and his associates were released on April 30.
