Israeli expert on Iran to lecture at Govt sponsored course on Religious Fundamentalism in Jamia

The Centre for West Asian Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is going to a One-Week Course on “Religious Fundamentalism in Global Perspective” from February 8-13, 2016. The course has been duly approved by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India under its Global Initiative of Academic Network (GIAN) scheme.
 
The Inaugural Programme is scheduled to be held on February 8, 2016 at 10.00 AMin the Conference Hall of Imarat Ibn Khaldun, Centre for West Asian Studies, JMI.
 
Prof. Talat Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor, JMI shall be the Chief Guest of the Inaugural Programme.
 
The objective of the course is to expose students to the major characteristics of religious fundamentalism in global perspective. A comparative perspective would be introduced to evaluate case-studies of individual movements and phenomena by studying their origins, ideology and political conduct. The major aim of organizing this short term course is to demonstrate to students that many religions are dynamic and ever evolving historical actors.
 
The lecture shall be delivered by Prof. Mier Litvak, an eminent expert at the Department of Middle Eastern History, Director of the Alliance Centre for Iranian Studies, Principal Research Fellow at the Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies and Coordinator of the Parviz and Pouran Nazarian Chair for Modern Iranian Studies, at Tel Aviv University. His fields of expertise include Modern Shi’a and Iranian History and modern Islamic movement. Author of Shi’i Scholars of Nineteenth Century Iraq: ‘Ulama’ of Najaf and Karbala (Cambridge: Cambridge University press, 1988).
 
His most recent publication edited with Dr. Bruce Maddy-Weitzman is Nationalism, Identity and Politics: Israel and the Middle East – Studies in Honor of Prof. Asher Susser (Tel Aviv: Dayan Centre for Middle Eastern Studies, 2014, English and Hebrew). In addition, he has articles of modern Shi’I and Iranian History as well as on modern Islamic movement.
